STEPS was initiated in 1995 by four Loughborough families who had children with cerebral palsy
or associated motor dysfunctions. They had experienced the benefits that conductive education
brought to their children and wanted other East Midland's families in a similar position to have the same
benefits without the disruption that trips to the Petö Institute in Hungary cause to family life.
STEPS opened in the nursery room at Ashmount School with five children and now serve around thirty
children and their families a year.
The charity offers a unique service in Leicestershire to children with cerebral palsy,
Down syndrome and any motor dysfunction or delay, and also to their parents and families. Their philosophy is that
early intervention gives the best opportunity for integration into school and the community later.
Parents may bring their children as soon as after birth as they are diagnosed and feel ready.
STEPS needs to raise £100,000 each year to fund the school.
